Celebrating 50 years

Sri Rajesh Khaitan, Our Founder

Sri Rajesh Khaitan was born in 1945 to Sri Radhakrishna Prasad Khaitan and Bhagirathi Devi Khaitan. The Khaitan family was an illustrious business family, with eighteen sugar and cotton mills in and around Maharashtra and U.P.

When Sri Rajesh Khaitan was a young boy, the sugar industry was nationalized in 1965, which forced the family to move to West Bengal. Sri Rajesh Khaitan completed his B.Com. from St. Xavier’s College, Calcutta and pursued Law from Calcutta University. He apprenticed with LP Agarwalla & Co, Solicitors and was thereafter appointed by Sri Ram Nath Goenka of Indian Express as his solicitor and advocate. Sri Rajesh Khaitan set up his own law firm in August 1972 under the name and style of Rajesh Khaitan & Co., Solicitors & Advocates.

It was in 1977, during the Emergency, that Sri Rajesh Khaitan was approached by the then Prime Minister, Mrs. Indira Gandhi, to advise her and she persuaded him to join politics. He was thereafter appointed treasurer of WBPCC (West Bengal Pradesh Congress Committee) in 1980 and in 1981 he contested and won the Burrabazar Vidhan Sabha constituency election. Sri Rajesh Khaitan was Member of Legislative Assembly for 22 years from 1981 to 2002. He was also Director in UBI (United Bank of India) from 1981 to 1984 and on the panel of Coal India, Canara Bank, amongst others. During his stint as lawyer, Sri Rajesh Khaitan has handled high-profile cases both in the High Court as well as the Supreme Court of India. He, along with his colleagues and associates, worked hard and created a name for the firm to such an extent that it was among the top five Law firms in Bengal.

He breathed his last on 15th December, 2019.

Mr Harsh Neotia

Rajesh Khaitan & Co., Advocates, is one among the prominent Law Firms based in Kolkata. Founded by Late Shri Rajesh Khaitan in the year 1972, it is celebrating its Golden Jubilee celebration this year. Although Late Shri Rajesh Khaitan was brought into active politics by Late Smt. Indira Gandhi and had an illustrious political career in West Bengal, he, along with his colleagues and associates created a name for the Law Firm through sheer hard work and legal acumen. After demise of Rajesh Khaitan, his son Mr Shakti Khaitan took reign of the firm and is taking forward the legacy of his beloved father. A Xaverian and a Law Graduate from Calcutta University, Shakti, has a sharp mind and vast domain knowledge, which will take the firm to greater heights.

Mr Noomi Mehta

To head a firm of 50 years vintage requires knowledge, skill, tenacity and an appreciation of people to keep them motivated. It is difficult enough to run a business but to carry on a legacy and strengthen it at the same time makes it tougher. Shakti has broad shoulders to carry the load and build for the future. I wish him all the best in his endeavors.
